Sabril (Vigabatrin) is a remedy for epileptic medication, which is also known as an anticonvulsant. The drug is combined with other medications to treat complex partial seizures in adults and adolescents above 16 years of their age. The pill is administered to patients’ post various anti-epileptic medications have been administered with negative results of controlling seizures. The powder form of  this solution is used to treat infantile spasms in babies and children between the ages of 1 month and 2 years.

Vigabatrin resides to the class of medications which are called anticonvulsants. The solution is used to deal with or treat seizures. The medication is administered often in combination with other antiseizure medications when other medications is not proved to be beneficial. This medication works by increasing or enhancing the levels of certain chemicals in the brain and by making seizures low feasible to occur. The chemical is also used for treating infantile spasms which is also known as West syndrome.

Drug Description:

SABRIL (Vigabatrin) is an oral tablet or oral powder for reconstitution, an antiepileptic drug. It is found as nearly white film-coated 500 mg pills and as a white to off-white granular powder for oral solution in packets of 500 mg. The chemical is a racemate subsisting of two enantiomers Vis (±) 4-amino-5-hexenoic acid. The molecular formulais denoted as C6H11NO2, with 129.16 as molecular weight.

The chemical is a nearly white to off-white powder, freely soluble in water, slightly soluble in methyl alcohol, very slightly soluble in ethyl alcohol and chloroform, and completely insoluble in toluene and hexane. The pH of a 1% aqueous solution is about 6.9. The n-octanol/water partition coefficient is about 0.011 (log P=-1.96) at physiologic pH. The chemical melts with decomposition in a 3-degree range within the temperature interval of 171°C to 176°C. The dissociation constants (pKa) are 4 and 9.7 at room temperature (25°C). Each SABRIL pill inhibits 500 mg of Vigabatrin, the main active ingredient.

The inactive ingredients in the pill may include hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, polyethylene glycols, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide.

Indications:

Refractory Complex Partial Seizures (CPS): the drug is indicated as collateral therapy for adults and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older with refractory complex limited seizures who have inappropriate acknowledgement to assorted different analysis and for whom the potential benefits outweigh the risk of vision loss. The pill is not indicated as a first line agent for complex partial seizures.

Infantile Spasms (IS): The pill is indicated as monotherapy for pediatric patients with infantile spasms 1 month to 2 years of age for whom the potential benefits outweigh the potential risk of vision loss.

Overdose:

There is no specific antidote for curing this pill overdose. Standard measures to take put unabsorbed pill should be used, including removal by emesis or gastric lavage. Supportive measures should be worked on, including monitoring of vital signs and examination of the clinical status of the patient. In some rare case reports renal failure patients gain therapeutic doses of vigabatrin, hemodialysis reduced vigabatrin plasma concentrations by 40% to 60%.

Using Guide:

  • The solution is available in tablets or powder form for oral administration.
  • The pills are usually consumed twice a day. It could be consumed with or without food.
  • Do not stop taking the pills suddenly. This can cause very serious and dangerous problems like any seizure medicine suddenly can cause seizures that will not stop in people who are being treated for seizures.

Storage:

Sabril 500 mg pills are purely white in color, film-coated, oval, biconvex, scored on one side, and debossed on the other. They are available as bottles in packages of 100. Sabril 500 mg packets have a white to off-white granular powder. They are available in packages of 50. Store the solution at 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). The solution should be strictly kept away from children, infants and pets.

Side Effects:

More common side effects due to this pill may include blue-yellow color blindness, blurred vision, decreased vision or other vision changes, eye pain, increase in seizures, loss of memory, problems with memory.

Less common or rare side effects are uncontrolled rolling eye movements.

Precautions:

The chemical in the pill may result in some serious reactions like drowsiness, dizziness, or vision problems. These effects may be turn more badly if you take the medication in combination with alcohol or certain medicines. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe activities until and unless you are confident enough to perform well. Patients who consumed the pill may be at higher risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. The risk may be greater in patients who have had suicidal thoughts or actions in their past. Keen observation is suggested to be maintained on people consuming Sabril (Vigabatrin Oral Solution). Consult a doctor immediately if new, worsened, or sudden symptoms such as depressed mood; anxious, restless, or irritable behavior; panic attacks; or any unusual changes in mood or behavior occur.

Some people consuming this pill have evolved with mild to severe vision problems. Vision loss gained due to intake of vigabatrin may be for a serious longer period of time or permanent. Hence, one is suggested to have eye exams on a regular basis while getting treated under this medication.
